Medical requirements for taxi drivers

As part of the application requirements, applicants for hackney carriage or private hire driver licences must obtain and submit a medical questionnaire completed by their own GP, or by another medical practitioner who has had access to their medical records for the last five years.

A medical form will be sent out with all application packs. The applicant will need to make an appointment with their GP and pay any fees required.

Medical practitioners are asked to confirm that the applicant complies with the Group 2 medical standards, set by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). Read the DVLA medical standards for a summary.

More information about our expectations of an applicant's physical fitness and well being is available in our  Taxi and Private Hire Licensing Policy (PDF 1.4MB).

Diabetic drivers

We have adopted specific policies for any diabetic drivers, who are either undergoing insulin treatment, or where the condition is managed by way of tablets which may induce hypoglycaemia.

Applicants must provide:

  • the medical report outlined above, in which the GP must confirm that the applicant complies with the Group 2 medical standards for diabetes mellitus;
  • declarations from the applicant confirming that they will abide by the medical advice they have been given, and provide further information to us upon request; and
  • in the case of insulin-treated diabetes, a hospital consultant's letter which confirms that insulin treatment has been under way for at least four weeks.

More information, and the form for giving the additional declarations, are available in our  Guidelines on licensing diabetic individuals as taxi drivers (PDF 53 KB)
